CNY

Hmm…26 Jan 2004, it’s been 4 days since the Lunar New Year, over the course I went through a whirlwind of emotions, making this year pretty memorable hehe…

Firstly, my family reunion, my extended relatives all went overseas during the holidays. So this year, of a possible 8 families that numbered almost 40 people, there was only 8…my poor grandma was pretty upset over this dismay turnout. The whole house lacked the usual warm feeling, in its’ place was a rather cold and solemn mood. Very boring stuff, no one gambled (there wasn’t enough people), no one was smiling. My dad was already pissed with his siblings for pulling a no-show. Some went to New Zealand, the rest were in the US.

I don’t know why my aunts and uncles would do something like this, I mean my grandma so wanted the whole family to be together, after all it’s only once a year where we actually meet up. I was pretty disappointed myself, there wasn’t even any house visiting this year, because no one was around. It just didn’t feel like Chinese New Year.

In the evening, I went over to my girlfriend’s aunt’s house to “Bai Nian” and play Blackjack. After that, we moved onto Cineleisure to watch the Last Samurai. Had supper at that 24 hour Prata store near Princep Street, Erin and I shared 1 mutton Mutabak, 2 egg pratas (coincidentally plain prates were sold out) and very small cups of ice milo... Indian Prata stores make the most money during Chinese New Year thanks to all other eateries being closed during this season. The place was packed to the brim, oily and stuffy, we finished as soon as possible and quickly made our way to orchard. Caught the 2.25am show; surprisingly the theatre was pretty empty on the sides. I really have to thank my baby for accompanying me knowing that she hates Tom Cruise to the core and yet went ahead and slept…oopz… I mean sat through the 2 hour long show hehe =P.

Review Of Last Samurai
Ok before you write this movie off as another Tom flick where our hero is over glorified and made to look like a wartime god, take a second look for this is more than your average holiday blockbuster. No detail has been spared in bringing feudal Japan to life in the lush greenery of NZ. The setting, props and costumes are certainly impressive, depicting the fashion sense of that era. Tom Cruise plays Captain Nathan, a down and out army regular, who’s reduced to a spokesperson for the gun manufacturer, Winchester. His invited back to the military to assist the Japanese foreign emissary train their troops in firearms back in Japan. With great reluctance, Tom travels across the globe, where his greeted by a culture totally unlike his own. Japan’s new emperor is modernizing the economy, ridding the old and bringing in the new. Tom’s task is to train a battalion to wipe out the last of the samurai whom are believed to be staging a rebellion against the monarch. The samurai are led by the enigmatic Katsumoto, played by Ken Watanabe. I was pretty moved by the whole film, the budding friendship between Katsumoto and Nathan is definitely well played out by the 2 leads. Tom is easily overshadowed by the omni-present Watanabe, who stole the show. A stirring film, great dialogue, lots of epic battle scenes, call me a sucker for Japanese samurai movies, but I savored every single moment of this flick. 4 out of 5 in my book…must watch! Only gripe, why didn’t it lasted longer??? Haha!

On the 2nd day itself, my family would normally play host to our friends and relatives, but not this year, my dad’s foul mood showed again, when he cancelled the dinner. He didn’t want anyone in the house nor did he want to see anyone. We spent the day just lazing around, I couldn’t stand it, and I had to get out. My girlfriend came to visit my house; she received a BIG BIG Hong Bao from my dad, hehehe. Went over to my grandma’s house for dinner after that, but couldn’t stay for long, had another round of gambling at Erin’s uncle’s house. We were the banker that night, lost big time =( guess lady luck wasn’t on our side.

The following day, I went over to Clarence’s house, his family catered tonnes of food, and me like the glutton I am gorged myself silly hehe. To top it off, I downed 3 bottles of absolute vodka with my friend. Mixed them with red bull, ribena, coke, 7-up till I was totally high haha *hic….After that went home took the car not before being railed at my dad again for taking the car, *sianz. I went to meet Erin and did supper. Discovered a great place to munch that day, it’s called Checkers located at UOL building just infront of Cineleisure, and it’s open 24-7!!! Ambience and music played a large part, Erin loved the music and relaxed atmosphere. I loved their Maryland Fried Chicken. Haha…

4th Day, awoke to a pretty rainy day yet again…seems like it’s been raining non-stop for the past 2 days…Arranged to meet my baby for some Pizza for dinner, she’s been craving for it. Went to her house to pick her up, we took a SUPER cold SBS Bus to Plaza Sg. As if it wasn’t bad enough that it was fiendishly cold, we were surrounded by blackies soaked in coconut oil, both of us almost choked hehhee…finally got to Pizza Hut, we ordered the couple’s special set, which consisted of 1 regular pizza of your choice, 2 drinks, soup, salad, garlic bread and fish O’s. Pretty good value for money, I felt like a balloon in the end.

Today, I’m actually writing this blog using my baby’s laptop. She’s attending lectures now and I followed her here (yes all the way to Ngee Ann Poly) Been drawing lots of stares from the students here thanks partially to my hair colour I think. It’s my off day today, hence why I’m able to keep my baby company =P kinda enjoying right now…being in school and not having to study hahaha unlike some people…oopz!!! *Kidding*. The weather’s been atrocious lately, I need a suntan badly and the sun never comes out and it rains practically everyday. Have not been lifting weights lately either…body doesn’t feel as firm as before, not good…have to squeeze in a session at least once this week.

Till next week, adios! Oh yea, to my beloved, Erin, I love you *Muacks* buh-bye!!!

Usually

I woke up late at 10.30am today…my work starts at 11!!!

Rushed out of the house at 11.05am got on the train at 11.10 and was seated in office at 11.30. Ok both my boss’ faces were black as hell. I didn’t dare say a word to either of them except to apologize for being late.

My baby is somewhere in orchard now I guess, it’s still raining cats and dogs. Fantastic weather…can’t wait to meet her, even though the last time I saw her was little over 24 hours ago, and the last time we spoke was only about 3 hours back. Something about just being able to be with her puts the spark back into my otherwise dead Monday, ha!

After work, going over to Far East Plaza to grab my jeans, bought for me by Erin, “love it loads baby!” Meeting her and her brother and his girlfriend there too I think, from there we are proceeding to her grandmother’s house for reunion dinner, my third so far, it’s the fourth for my baby.

Just 30 more minutes, I can’t wait. Good thing, I’m not working on the 21st, could settle my parking summon (the first offense I have ever got in my 2 year driving career). Stupid URA parking attendant have no live I tell you. Who checks if you have parking coupons at 2.45am in the morning and a Sunday for that matter? Don’t they have to sleep???

Went to bleach and colour my hair as well on Friday night, now it’s a shocking ash green. I personally think its’ fab, but my parents, girlfriend think otherwise, another friend said my hair resembled the late Zhang Yu Sheng, whoever that is…

Oh well, that’s about it. My entire Sunday was spent sleeping, yea like pigs I know, skipped breakfast, lunch – sleeping is the best form of dieting, without any of the temptation, cravings and hunger pangs. Who said exercise is the only way?

Well…till next week, I’m signing off. Getting ready for Chinese New Year, the red packets, the food, the friends, the relatives, the gatherings, the inevitable interrogations and best part, spend it with my other half, Erin. =P

Oopz~!!!

My baby is at home now resting from what could possibly be indigestion. Took the cab with her this morning and she was wolfing down a Breadtalk? Fiery Floss in a matter of seconds. And thanks to a rather bumpy ride along Paya Lebra Road, she also got kinda car-sick. I had no choice but to leave her at home and leave for work =~(

Tried to make everything as comfortable for her as possible. As I can?t be there for her. ?I?m sorry baby!? Be right there immediately after work to accompany you. Almost gonna end?she called earlier saying that she felt better. I feel abit guilty because I bought the bread, and also she missed her classes today. Felt uneasy leaving at home all by herself today?missed her a lot too?"8 more minutes ah ger! Then Ah gong will fly straight back to see you =P"

Love You Loads Ah Ger

2nd Month Anniversary (Jan 10)

Hmmm?realized I haven?t been blogging as of late. *Sigh?the joys of couplehood. Always so little time to do so many things. Only free time I have is when I?m back in the office skiving *ahaha~!!!

Celebrated my 2nd Month Anniversary with Erin at Paularnas, Millenia Walk on Saturday. Earlier that night she had a dinner function organised by her volunteer group, the Leo Club at Raffles Town Club. She had to play the usher as well as setup the whole hall. I went to pick her up from there. Was a real eye opener, the toilets in the clubhouse were MASSIVE! The suite they gave my gf was even better, it had built in Jacuzzi, mini-theatre, sauna, piped in bossa-nova music and quite possibly the nicest shower screen I ever saw (it was semi-transulent, very very sexy) all set in a post modern setting with furniture to boot!

Well her dinner ended around midnite, as we were getting ready to drive off I suddenly realized, there was no pay station in-sight!!! So me and another guy were doing circles aound B1 of the carpark searching for that station auto-pay machine. After an intense 20min hunt, we finally located the blasted thing at Level B3. Why can?t a posh club like Raffles afford to install pay-stations on each level? I don?t know either?

With that aside, we proceeded on to Paularnas (I think that?s how you spell it) Got for myself a Munich Dark Draft (A very smooth but kinda frothy micro-brew which made me burp non-stop) and Erin got a Strawberry Margarita (looked like ice-kacang hehe) took tonnes of pics there before heading on home. Oh yea, I gave my baby a bouquet of red roses and a little picture book I made which included poems and short little notes to my beloved?

Next day (Sunday), we went back to her place to pick up her sis, Rena, brought her to Swensen?s for lunch and celebrated her 9th B?day. Went walk walk around Tampines Mall there till about 5pm before we headed over to my home to join my parents in celebrating my Grandad?s birthday dinner at some restaurant in Bukit Batok called Guilin. Saw my cousins there too, it?s been like?1 year since we last saw each other during Chinese New Year?

Me and Erin were already kinda bloated from our late lunch, but alas, we continued to gorge ourselves on the splendid course that was served *yea I know machiam pigs right? I?m slammin? on the pounds? After the meal we went back to my house, was supposed to send her back around 1am, but after such a hearty meal, the only thing on both of our minds was to sleep..zzz..Zzz..

Woke up this morning sent my baby via cab while I went straight to work, kinda hate leaving her, but I got no choice, need the cash. She just called me, asked me if I wanted to join her family for reunion dinner at a Jap restaurant in Miramar Hotel. Mmm?looks like another round of feasting, and this time its? sushi!!! Yummy =9~ Seems like we?re always eating when we are together, gonna look like sumo-wrestles pretty soon hehe?Till next time cheerios!

PS: To Erin, if you?re reading this, I LOVE YOU! *Muacks!

I got a NEW EAR~!!!

How was everyone new year? I had a pretty good one. Went to my girlfriend’s house to pick her up. From there we headed straight for Raffles City. Our plan was to park the car there and walk over to Suntec, for dinner and the countdown.

The place was packed! We literally had to fight for parking space, by that time both of us were starting to get really hungry (it was 9.45pm duh!). Somehow everyone had the same idea to have their dinners at that same time too. We settled for Nooch in the end.

Ordered Tom Yam soup, Thai Pineapple fried rice and mango dash for my baby as for me, Chicken Donburi Don and Ice Chendol (just thinking about it makes my mouth water =9~)

Okie, back to the story, once dinner was done we walked towards the fountain of wealth, only to be stopped by security guards explaining to us that the countdown has been cancelled!!! Fantastic! They canned the show, and drones of people left the place rather dejected.

However, all was not lost, we picked up Ju-On 2 movie tix for the 2.30am show and took a nice stroll back to Raffles City. And along the way, managed to catch a glimpse of fireworks along the Esplanade.

Got caught in another massive traffic jam just outside One Fullerton. Went to Lau Pah Sat after that for some tasty satay and much deserved ice kachang (double slurp! =9~)

We left at around 2.15am rushed back to Suntec to watch Ju-On2. Unfortunately we had to sit beside some @sshole and his girlfriend who kept yakking away even after I asked them to keep it down. The bugger kept saying loudly “next part is scary part!!!” Yea thanks for the commentary you moron…

REVIEW OF JU-ON2
Although I never watched the first show, watching its squeal was good enough. It relies more on shock value to scare Singapore movie-goers silly. Other than that, sadly the movie resorts to pure gore to make the viewer squirm. Storyline was badly chopped up, you had the middle part first, followed by the starting and ending. To further complicate the unwary mind, the scenes are divided into chapters named after whose gonna die next. Pure directing genius? You tell me.
Nevertheless, its bang for the buck, you get scared out of your wits and the movie is gonna make you check your groin area whenever you drive (hehe…=P)

The movie ended at about 4.30am. We came out still wide awake, my girlfriend said they were screening Mona Lisa Smile in 15mins time. I thought…what the heck…since we are here. And back to the ticketing booth we went. Got a couple seat and before you know it, we were back in the cinema again.

REVIEW OF MONA LISA SMILE (MLS)

When I saw the cast rolled out, I thought I had just stepped into some chick flick, boy was I wrong. MLS is not only a thought provoking story about a college arts teacher played by Julia Roberts and her class of cigarette chomping adolescents. But it also explores certain moral issues and social stigmas still inherent in today’s society despite the story being set in 1954. The movie also serves as a little history lesson on the lives of young woman during the golden era. Those hungering for some intense action better luck elsewhere, this is a thinking man’s…errr…I mean woman’s movie. The script is the key that binds the story together and the actresses bring each character to life with panache that I last saw in Wag the Dog.

Now I’m beginning to feel the effects of almost 6 hours of movies. Time check, 6.45am. The sun is up and I’m driving along orchard on deserted roads. I could still spy revelers loitering around here and there mostly couples looking rather disheveled (haha… wondering what they have been up to) Got home at around 7.30am and slept till 7.20pm that’s almost 12 hours of sleep!!! Had dinner with my girlfriend’s parents before going back to her place.

Well that was my New Year’s Day celebration in summary. The best part is I’m still working today which I feel is totally ludicrous.
